Cowles

My Great great grandmother was Elizabeth Stichen Cowles (b. apr 3rd 1837 in Kentucky)
Elizabeth Married Thomas Mills

Elizabeth's parents were  Vincent D. Cowles (b.1794) and Madeline ? (b. 1793)

Vincent's father was Henry B. Cowles (b. 1750 James City Co. VA)

Henry's father was John Cowles (b. about 1700)

John Cowles would be my Great, great, great, great, great grandfather

Descendants of John Cowles

Generation No. 1

1. JOHN1 COWLES was born Bet. 1700 - 1710.

Notes for JOHN COWLES:

(from Cowles Families in America)

According to tradition, John came directly from England to Virginia, and settled near Williamsburg, James City County, but he was the immigrant ancestor admits of grave doubt. It is not uncommon for families when they reach the name of the last known ancestor to conclude that he was the original immigrant, whereas he may have been born in the immediate neighborhood. The present case may be no exception to the general rule and it would be well to bear in mond that all the branches of the Cowles family of Virginia may be descended from Richard Cowles who was in Virginia in 1614 and perhaps earlier.

Thomas is the only child of John Cowles mentioned in the tradition but from the evedence contained in the will of John Cooper, he probably had other children listed below. The name of his wiofe is unknown.

If the inference is correct that he names one of his sons Edmund, of which there can be but little doubt, the presumption is strong that he was a descendent of Edmund Cowles who was in Charles City County and James City County, VA, in 1666 and perhaps earlier, and who patented land which had been bought by Richard Cowlws in 1614, perhaps his father.

Children of JOHN COWLES are:

i. SUZANNA2 COWLES, m. JOHN COOPER, Williamsburg, Va.

He was called Edmund Cowles, Senior, in a survey made by his order in 1804 and, as a witness to a will, signed his name Edmund Cowles, Sr., in 1804.

His will mentions children L Lane, Henry B, to get his plantation after his wife ANNs death. Mitcham got some land also. Goodall (daughter). Grandson John Cowles. Henry arrived in KY with his sister, Elizabeth who brought along 2 slaves Peter and Ned from VA and gave them to John Cowles. He settled a lot of land having passed over on acct. of scarcity of water on a farm 2 miles from Pine Grove Church and 5 miles from Chalybeate, KY.

(cowles families in America)

Henry witnessed the will of Richard Brack of James City Co. VA in 1789, and is mentioned in the will of John Cooper of same county in 1791.

According to tradition he moved to Barren County KY, in 1804 with his sister Elizabeth who brought along 2 slaves Peter and Ned from VA and gave them to John Cowles. He settled in what is now Edmonson County KY, much more desireable land having been passed over on account of the scarcity of water, on a farm some two miles from Pine Grove Church and five miles from Chalybeate Springs. He and his maiden sister Elizabeth are buried in the family burying ground in the farm but their graves are unmarked.

In 1903, a part of the farm was known as the Jerry Poteet place, and part of it was owned by James Cowles, a grandson of Henry Cowles.

The wife of Henry Cowles was names Elizabeth and some of her descendants claim that her maiden name was Piggott, or Pickett. Edmund Cowles married Elizabeth Piggott or Toana, VA in May 1800, but it is not impossible that there should have been two of the same name.

Henry Cowles was a methodist, wore knee breeches and was a learned man. He bought land of a Mr. Holcomb in Edmonson Co. KY and there lived and died.

Will of henry Cowles 1835:

Notes for THOMAS EDWARD COWLES:

He signed the Jubilee paper issued by bishop Madison at Jamestown, May 13, 1807

In 1807, a dignified celebration marked the bicentennial of Jamestown. Sometimes referred to as "Virginiad," the celebration was most commonly called the Grand National Jubilee. No less than 3,500 people attended the event. Twelve to 14 vessels anchored in the river near the island to deliver many of the participants. College of William and Mary students gave orations and a company of players from Norfolk performed, converting an old barn on the island into a temporary theater. There were many dignitaries, politicians, and historians among the celebrants. One of these, Jamestown's own Colonel Champion Travis, was honored as a surviving member of the Virginia Convention of 1776--first to declare for state independence. May 13th was the opening day of the festival, which began with a procession which marched to the graveyard of the old church. The attending bishop reportedly stood on a tombstone to deliver the prayer. The procession then moved to the Travis mansion. The celebrants dined and danced in the mansion that evening. Jamestown claimed the life of another victim when a young man succumbed to heat stroke and "too free use of ice in cider." Visitors attended his funeral on the 14th. The Bicentennial celebration concluded with a dinner and toast at the Raleigh Tavern in Williamsburg.

Notes for MARY NORRIS:

Notes for MARY PATSEY OR PANSEY NORRIS (PANSLEY KING):

I have thought that Pansley King was the mother of James Nathaniel and his siblings. Due to information and census reports I believe they were the same person. Also I'd like to say it is still possible that there was a Pansley King Cowles but I think it is about a 5% chance of that. In Warren County Marriage Register Mary Norris is listed as Patsey Norris. Speculation: Mary Norris full name was Mary Patsey King Norris. Some people think that Patsey or Pansley whatever you want to call her that she was married to a King before Vincent but I don't believe this happened. Vincent and Patsey were married according to the Warren Co. Marriage Register. They were around the age of 21. Their son my 2nd great grandfather James was born in 1825 they were around the age of 33. According to a 1850 cenus they were still married being at the age of 58. Some problems though if I read it correctly Mary P. was born in TN. I read in a census report that said his (James N.) mother was !born in VA.????? Maybe Mary's mother was a King or something and they named her that. The Cowles Families in America might have wrote the wrong name down. Debbie Gravens grandaughter of William Arthur and Mae Cowles interviewed her grandmother Mae she gave what she had by memory had said that Vincent D.'s wife was Pansley King. This is a mystery to me.

Notes for BENJAMIN THOMAS MILLS:

Thomas Mills death certificate lists his father as Stephen Mills. This was given by Alva Mills, Dovie's

half brother who was born in 1884 to Tom's second wife

It has been reported to me by someone that their was a note on the back of the certificate giving

his name as Benjamin Thomas Mills and possibly listing his parents as Stephen and Anne Nancy Raley or at least they had made the connection. I had always been told that Tom's father was Benjamin. I wonder if his father is really Stephen and could it be coupled with Benjamin?

Dovie's certificate just say that father Thomas Mills and was given by Uncle Twain.

According to family tradition, Tom Mills was an orphan found at a grist mill at Bowling Green, Kentucky by the mill owner whose first name was Tom. It is believed that Tom Mills was abandoned by Indians that went through that night. He was named Mills because he was found at a mill. A "Tom Mill" used a large "hammer" to pound the grain. He was supposed to have been taken in and raised by a Wingfield family. This story appears to be incorrect, but widely spread. Mae Cowles of Bowling Green, Kentucky, Brent Mills Bledsoe of Brownsville, Kentucky and Hal D. Dinwiddie of Fairdale, Kentucky had also heard versions of this story. Jack L. Flowers reports that he had always been told that Tom Mills was an Indian

Text: Mrs. Eunice Estes Bowling Green, KY

Hollis, OK February 2, 1979

Dear Mrs. Estes,

I rec. your card and letter. So glad to hear from you. I meant to write for some time. If I remember right it was last Spring I wrote you. So much has happened since then. I had a wreck the 27 of May. A man hit me. He wasn't hurt, but I stay 27 days in intense care and 90 days in hospital. My oldest daughter brought me home and stay with me to Oct. I learn to walker a little and my wheel chair. So far I made most of the winter with my hired help. I hope when it warm up I can get some better. I had go back in hospital 5 Dec., then I went to Louisville. I had the best bone doctor in state. He said I wasn't healing right. He taken a 4 1/2 pin out my knee. I have two more and lots of small. I think another is working out. My left arm from shoulder to elbow is crush. That is giving most trouble. My right arm was broke. I can use it, but weak. I have a woman come two day week and clean house or anything I need done. We are still holding on to the store to try to keep my husband from going crazy. My daughter, Juanita been with me in the store for 4 years. They got a woman to take my place. She very good. She does most work. Wa won't agree on that. My oldest girl husband had heart attack the 18. He went to his brother's funeral and was caught in that snow. I know I seen it on TV in Ohio, had a attack and died. I went to Louisville Thursday. Come back same day. Margie's youngest boy is 17 year old. My grand--- take me up. I have 3 wonderful girl a-Sindows. Juanita has two girl. Is so good to me I don't know I do without Debbe. I am getting so tire I not writing very good so I try finish tomarrow.

I am back again. My arthritis is hurting me so bad I take everything and sometimes nothing helps.

Mills as far as I knew.

Tom Mills I was always told by my Aunt Mag, Gentry Cowles wife, Tom Mills was found by a grist mill where meal and flour was ground in them days. The owner found him. I never knew who he was, but his first name was Tom, and they give him Mills because they found him there. That as far back as he goes. A bunch of indians went thro that night, so they believe him to be a indian baby. He married a Cowles, had 3 boys, 1 girl. I know that bunch when I see them. I was very young then. All have passed on. More younger. I don't know any of the younger one. I will ask around this summer on more. I think your Grandfather was John Mills.

I am so forgettable any more. I am 73. There were George, John, and Joe. I forget which one was who. So I always said I was part indian. See Beulah, say hello to all for me.

Your cousin in KY,

Mae Cowles

Mae Cowles

Notes for THOMAS VAN MILLS:

Known as TV Mills.

My grandmother (87) and grandfather Mills (85) (age at death - my recollection) are both buried in Smithgrove cemetery. At Smith Grove KY. He died in 1965 and she died Jan. 1, 1960. From what I have heard, just after they married, they sharecropped for 23 years on the Johnny Cole Place that was just north of the Davenport farm on 31W north of Bowling Green. In his early fifties when he was worried that the land owners would not lease to him any more he bought his farm on the knob owned by Duncan's now. TV Mills, farmed all his life and my dad and he frequently worked together. My Dad owned a farm about a mile from his (now Aubrey Mills Road) and Patricia and Harold Watt now live on the road. At age 79 he decided to retire since he had some heart pains one day when he was out running down a young cow to get her in the barn for the evening. He decided he would go and talk to social security since he had regularly paid SS every year for many years. Since they did not have any birth records of his birth, they finally found a man in Brownsville who was 93 that remembered when he was born. He also walked everywhere he went unless my dad drove him since he did not own a car. He regularly walked to the WA Cowles grocery on 31W about 3 times a week to get bacon flower and white loaf bread. He always drank a coke at the store and picked up a block of Bull Durham chewing tobacco. I guess he used a small block about every two or three days. He milked his own cows and had chickens for eggs and meat. I was 12 when my grandmother died and I stayed every night for the next 18 months with him since he was having occasional chest pains. He loved to listen to WCKY out of Cincinnati on the radio each evening since they told jokes and played bluegrass music. It was out of range during the day not that he would have ever been in the house listening during the day anyway. He listened to WKCT Bowling Green for local news and weather and the Baptist hour at 4:00 PM each day.

I ran across your Cowles genealogy website last night while searching for something, and I have some citations you might be interested in. In the meantime, if you ever find out which Goodall Lucy Cowles
married, I would appreciate it if you would contact me, or ClaraLewis@Verizon.com, or lonnie_goodall@hotmail.com. (Are you in touch with J1Dalby@aol.com? I know she is also looking for the name
of the husband of Lucy Cowles (found living with her daughter in Kentucky).

At any rate, one of our old relatives in VA sold one of your old relatives a Ferry Landing many years ago:

1739 November Court -p. 113 - Deed of JOHN GOODALL to Thomas Cowles recorded.
MARY, wife of John, relinquished her dower right. (From Charles City Co., VA RECORDS 1737-1774, R929.37554,W427C-1986 from Clara Lewis)

May 8, 1742 Saturday,
Also, a Petition of Thomas Cowles, Keeper of the Public Ferry over Chickahominy River at GOODALL'S [John Goodall, decd], praying, That the name of the said Ferry may be altered, and appointed
from GOODALL'S to Hamner's Point, or Williams's; were severally presented to the House, and received. (FROM JOURNALS OF THE HOUSE OF BURGESS, V 7, R975.5, V817J from Clara
Lewis)

May 14, 1742 Friday
Resolved, That the Petition of Thomas Cowles, Keeper of the Public Ferry over Chickahominy River, at GOODALL'S [John Goodall, decd] for altering the name of the said Ferry, and appointing it from
GOODALL'S to Hamner's Point, or Williams's, is reasonable. (FROM JOURNALS OF THE HOUSE OF BURGESS, V 7, R975.5, V817J from Clara Lewis)

May 17, 1742 Monday, Also that it be an Instruction to the Committee, appointed to bring in a Bill, for altering the Name of GOODALL'S [John Goodall, decd] Ferry, and appointing it from
GOODALL'S to Hamner's Point, or Williams's, to receive a Clause or Clauses, pursuant to the Resolution, for appointing a Ferry from Ebenezer Floyd's, over Potowmack River, to Powel's Landing in
Maryland. (FROM JOURNALS OF THE HOUSE OF BURGESS, V 7, R975.5, V817J from Clara Lewis)

[NOTE: Thus, JOHN GOODALL’S Ferry becomes COWLE’s Ferry (see citation in 1748). A Thomas Cowles was a Justice of the Peace or Sheriff of James City County 1700 & 1702.
Looks as though there may have been more than one Thomas Cowles. DG]

This is a snippet from a large Civil War era map, and while you probably can't read the printing, there where I have positioned "JG #3" (for the third John
Goodall we have information on) it says, "Coles Ferry".

"Coles" or "Cowles", we had already figured out that this was the site of John's Ferry, so it has to be yours, too.

Virginia Gazette - 1776
Taken up at Mr. THOMAS COWLES ferry landing, in JAMES CITY County, a bay mare about 13 hands and a half high, 9 or 10 years old, with a hanging mane and a switch tail, has had a fistula, and branded on the near buttock IC. The owner may have her on proving his property, and paying charges, of the subscriber, near the place of her being taken up.

Marriages:
Mr. THOMAS COWLES, of Charles City, to Miss ELIZABETH CRAWLEY, of Williamsburg; a young Lady who, besides a ample Fortune, is endowed with every Qualification requisite to render the Marriage state happy.

Virginia Gazette – 1777
RUN away from the Subscriber, in James City, the latter end of July last, a large black Negro fellow names CHARLES, a sawyer by trade, has a large sear in his face, and straddles much in his walk; he is much addicted to running away, was taken up at Hampton in 1776, where he endeavored to pass as a freeman, and was lurking, as I suppose, in order to get the opportunity of some vessels to escape out of the country. As he may have probably made that way now with the same design, I forewarn all masters of vessels from harbouring or employing him; and I will give the person who takes up and brings him to me, or secures him in any prison, TWENTY SHILLINGS, besides the allowance by law.
THOMAS COWLES

Virginia Gazette – 1776
To be sold immediately on CHICKAMONY River, a very valuable Track of LAND, consisting of upwards of 800 Acres, with my Ferry and Ordinary, having necessary buildings on the Plantation, and also a fine Apple Orchard. The Land abounds with good Pine Timber, and there is a large Quantity of Marsh which is very valuable for Stock of all kinds, and also convenient for fishing and fowling. Any Person inclined to purchase the said Tract may know the Terms by applying to the Subscriber, who lives on the premises.

THOMAS COWLES
Virginia Gazette - 1776
It gives us PAIN, my Lord, to find that the Indians have made fresh Encroachments and Disturbances on out Frontiers. We have only to request that Your Excellency will be pleased to exert those Powers with which you are fully invested, by the Acts of Assembly for making Provision against Invasions and Insurrections; which we doubt not, will be found sufficient to repel the hostile and perfidious Attempts of those and barbarous Enemies.
