MCCORMICK, JOHN, SR.,b 30 Aug 1753 Winchester Frederick Co. VA d 18 Apr 1837 Fayette Co IN .m 24 Mar 1783 Bedford Co PA CATHERINE DRENNAN b 25 Jan 1769 d 22 Feb 1862 Fayette Co IN

. He was a veteran of the Revolutionary War. He served in Captain James Robinson's company, Colonel Christie's Regt. in 1776; he reenlisted 8 January 1778 in Capt. Mark's Co., 14th VA Regiment, subsequently in the same Co. with the 10th Va. Regt. under Col. Charles Lewis. Part of his service was at Fort Henry on Long Island; he fought the Cherokee Indians on the Watauga and Tennessee Rivers.; in the fall of 1780 he was a sentry at Bedford, PA. (A ROSTER OF REVOLUTIONARY ANCESTORS OF THE INDIANA DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION, VOL I, JULY 4, 1976 ) Apparently while stationed in Bedford, PA he met Catherine Drennan, who was born in Bedford Co. on 25 Jan 1769. They were married on 24 March 1785. Their oldest child, Sarah, was born on 22 April 1786.

Catherine Drennan is probably the daughter of Samuel Drennan (Drenning), who arrived in what is now Bedford Co PA in the early 1760¹s. He owned 200 acres of land in Cumberland Valley, Cumberland County, 2 miles from Ft. Bedford, PA. in 1767. Bedford Co. PA was not formed until 1771. S amuel was a Revolutionary War veteran as was his son, William Drennan b 30 Nov. 1762. William served in Capt. Davidson¹s Company. (From unpublished information, the source unknown, which was in the files of James D. Boor, Box 203, RD 1, New Enterprise, PA 16664)

The immigrant ancestor of the Drenning (Drennan) family was probably William Drennan, a religious prisoner, transported to New Jersey from Edinburgh, Scotland during the 1680¹s. According to family tradition, the Drennings are Irish, but are likely Scotch-Irish who came from Scotland and settled in Ulster, northern Ireland, William had three grandsons born in Chester Co. PA: Thomas, Samuel and John. Thomas move gto South Carolina, John to Tennessee, and Samuel to Bedford Co., PA. Consequently, we can assume that Samuel is the ancestor of our grandmother Catherine and the other Drennans who lived in Bedford Co. PA. (From unpublished information, the source unknown, which was in the files of James D. Boor, Box 203, RD 1, New Enterprise, PA 16664)

After their marriage, John and Catherine apparently lived in Bedford Twp., Bedford Co., PA for a time. John McCormick appears on the tax list there for the years 1788 and 1789. He did not appear on the tax list for Bedford Co. in 1791 and 1792. The family then possibly moved to Virginia and then to Hamilton Co OH by 1791 where their fourth child John was born. Following a fime in Butler Co. OH , the he family moved to Preble Co. OH before a later move to Fayette Co. IN.

In 1808 the family settled near the present site of Connersville, IN (Fayette Co.), where they built the first cabin in the settlement. The Indian fort was still standing. Their sons, John, Jr., James, and Samuel built the first house in what is now Indianapolis, IN. This branch of the McCormick family is of Scottish extraction; their ancestors moved from Scotland to northern Ireland, and then to America about 1700, settling in PA., before moving to the area around Winchester, VA. (Mrs. Catherine Eagle(daughter of James McCormick), "THE MCCORMICK FAMILY, FIRST SETTLERS OF INDIANAPOLIS" From IINDIANA MAGAZINE OF HISTORY, March 1925, Vol.XXI, Indiana Univ., p.311.)
THE MCCORMICK CHILDREN:
1. Sarah, born 22 April 1786, married Robert Samuel Sanders and became our direct ancestor.
2. Anna, born 6 Sept. 1787, married Frankboner.
3. Samuel, born 23 Sept. 1789, married Elizabeth Case.
4. John born 25 Sept. 1791 Hamilton Co OH d 25 Aug 1875 m Bethiah Case.
5. William, born 27 Sept, 1793, married Susan Wolverton.
6. Joseph, born 7 Sept. 1795.
7. James, b1797 Butler Co OH m Patsy (Martha) Perkins b S. C.
8. Elizabeth, born 29 March 1800, married John Williams.
9. Jane, born 4 June 1802, married Thomas Kirkwood.
10.Robert, born 19 June 1804, married Elizabeth Job
11. Lewis, born 9 June 1807, married Mary Stephens.
12.Catherine, born 20 Dec 1808, married James Kirkwood.
13. David, born 24 Jan 1811, married Elizabeth Gregg.
14. Mary, born 8 July 1813, died on 1 Nov 1815.
The son Lewis McCormick was sheriff of Fayette County, IN from 1852 to 1854. He served as Administrator of his father's estate as well as Administrator of his brother John's estate in 1829.

The son William McCormick married Susan Wolverton in Preble County, OH and was a land owner there before moving to Fayette Co., IN. After his father's death in 1837 and during the period between 1848 and 1851, William purchased several tracts of land in Fayette County from other heirs of his father. This included 100 acres of land inherited by Sara and Robert Sanders and sold to William in January 1846. The Sanders had moved to Delaware County , IN around 1823.

About the year 1829, William McCormick purchased the land in Delaware Co, Indiana upon which Robert Sanders had carried on trade with the Indians since about 1823. After that, Mr. McCormick entered land in Section 14, where he developed a farm. He came to occupy his land in about 1833. He laid out a village in the northeast corner of Section 14 in September 1837 . One of the oldest roads in the county is Wheeling Avenue, as it is now(1924) called, leading from Muncie to this point, and this highway was the first regular mail route to this part of the county. The mail was carried on horseback as far as Logansport, and later a hack service was installed and continued in use until the railroad was built a few years ago. William McCormick's house was the first post office, which went by the name of Cranberry post office until it was changed to Wheeling. (Frank D. Haimbaugh, HISTORY OF DELAWARE COUNTY, INDIANA, TWO VOLUMES, VOL. (Indianapolis: Historical Publishing Co., 1924), p.100)

"During the time the old courts in this state (Indiana) were constituted with a bench consisting of president judge and two "side judges," or until this system was abandoned with the operation of the new Constitution in 1852, the associate judges in this county, besides the two Reeses, were (in turn) John Tomlinson, Samuel McCulloch, William McCormick, William Van Matre, Eleazar Coffeen, John Richey, John Brady, and John A. Gilbert."

Among the eleven children of John McCormick, Jr., who died in 1829, were twin daughters, Tabitha and Lavina, On 27 November 1834 these twins married twin brothers. Tabitha married Moses Marts and Lavina married Isaac Marts. During a Fayette County IN centennial celebration in the 1930's, this marriage ceremony was re-enacted.

NO. 212
FRANCIS MCCORMICK b 17 Apr 1734 d Jul 1794 s/o Dr. John McCormick & Ann Graham (?) m ANN PROVINCE d/o Thomas Province & Sarah______

IT HAS BEEN DETERMINED THAT JOHN MCCORMICK, SR. SHOWN ABOVE CANNOT BE THE SON OF THIS FRANCIS MCCORMICK, AS PREVIOUSLY BELIEVED. FRANCIS HAD A SON NAMED JOHN BUT MARRIAGE RECORDS, ETC. FOUND SHOW THAT THIS SON WAS NOT OUR ANCESTOR JOHN MCCORMICK. A STRONG POSSIBILITY EXISTS THAT OUR JOHN IS RELATED IN SOME MANNER TO THIS FRANCIS, BECAUSE BOTH LIVED IN THE SAME AREAS OF VA.

The following information consitS of quotations from Hugh Milton McIlhaney, Jr.'s book SOME VIRGINIA FAMILIES.

"Francis McCormick was married twice, the first wife being a Miss Province and the second wife a Miss Frost. By his first marriage he had eight children, and one child by his second. He was a large land owner, and each of his five sons who settled in Clarke Co. (VA) possessed a valuable farm. They were all men of great strength of character, energetic and enterprising".

A short history of the family was published in 1890 in Mr. Norris's "History of the Lower Shenandoah Valley", from which some of the facts given here have been derived, including the following to paragraphs. "The early members of the McCormick family were singularly unobtrusive people, content in the happiness derived from their own family relations, being extremely clanish...both tghe men and the women of the family....were without guile, strictly honorable, affectionate, domestic, and courteous. One of their characteristics was their great regard for the truth."

"One of the heir-looms of the family was an old English prayer book, from which much of the data in this article was gleaned. Unfortunately it was destroyed during the late War. This prayer book was given by Francis McCormick to his son Thomas McCormick at the time of his marriage. In it was a family tree on parchment, a very valuable and curious relic. One page represented Dr. John McCormick in a blue broadcloth suit with brass buttons; another, the marriage scene; yet another, Anne McCormick with a blue bodice and yellow silk or satin skirt, with a branch of something in her hand and a bird; another, a death scene, a coffin, etc., and a notice of dates, births and deaths beneath. The dates were all in the 1700's"

(McIlhaney, Hugh Milton, SOME VIRGINIA FAMILIES) The following
information consists of quotations from Hugh Milton McIlhaney, Jr.'s book SOME VIRGINIA FAMILIES
.

"Dr. John McCormick, who emigrated to Virginia from Ireland between the years 1730 and 1740, was the founder of this family in America. In the Orange County records thee is a deed under the date of May 21, 1740 from Jost Hite to "John McCormick of Orange County" for 395 acres of land. Subsequently he took up other grants adjoining this property, which was located in that part of Orange County that eventually became Jefferson Co., WV. It was on this estate, near Summit Point, that in 1740 he built "The White House" which is still standing. "Weehaw" and"Upton" were a part of this property."

"He was a graduate in medicine of the University of Dublin, and brought with him to this country a large and valuable medical library, which was sold at his death to Dr. Cramer, then the leading physician of Charlestown. He was the most prominent physician in his neighborhood, "

"He left a lasting impression upon the community in which he lived. He died in the year 1768, leaving a wife and eight children. His estate was appraised Feb. 8, 1769. In his will, made May 8 1768 and recorded 2 Nov 1768, he mentions his wife Anne, his sons - James, John, Francis, William, George, and Andrew, his "daughter Mary Tate, wife to Magnus Tate", and his "daughter Jean Byren, wife to James Byrn." His wife and son James wee executors of his estate. "

"It would seem that he was married before coming to this country: but the maiden name of his wife is unknown. The descendants of his eight children are scattered throughout many States, some of his sons having gone to Pennsylvania and some to the West"

From Indiana Biographies:

The McCormick Family McCauley, the English historian, said "The history of a country is best told in a record of the lives of its people." In conformity with this idea we will endeavor to present the history of these two families. The history of the McCormick family can be traced back to an early period in Scotland. During that period of Scotch history known as the "Covenanters" when the trouble arose between the established church and the Presbyterians, the McCormicks on account of persecution emigrated to the northern part of Ireland. They remained there for a time and later emigrated to America settling in Virginia and Pennsylvania.

John McCormick, Sr. a descendent of the McCormick family that came to America about the year 1700, was born about thirty miles from Winchester, Virginia, August 30th. 1754. At that time it was a province of Great Britain. The McCormicks were loyal to the king, but being opposed to the tyranical sic measures of the English government, early cast their lot with the colonists in their struggle for independence. John McCormick Sr. served in the Revolutionary war from 1776 to 1783, as the records in the War Department show. His first enlistment in 1776 was in Captain James Robinson’s Co. in Col. Church’s regiment, He again enlisted January 8th. 1778, in Captain James Shelley’s Co. and afterward served in Captain Mark’s Co. 14th Virginia regiment, subsequently in the same Co. with the 10th Virginia regiment under Col. Charles Lewis. His last enlistment was from Pennsylvania for three month’s service. A part of his service was against the Indians on the frontier. The records show that he engaged in a fight with the Indiana on the Wataga sic River. His residence at the time of his first enlistment was Molachucky sic River, Virginia, now a part of Tennessee. In 1780 at the expiration of his second enlistment he located in Bedford, Pennsylvania. On the 24th of March he was married to Catherine Drennen at Bedford, Pa. And in 1808 the whole family moved to Ohio, and settled in Preble County not far from Eaton. The overland trip was made in wagons, then down the Ohio River in flatboats.

They remained in Ohio only a short time then "Westward Ho," journeyed to the territory of Indiana. The remained sometime at the fort at Connorsville as there was trouble with the Indians at that time, but Mr. McCormick was the first man to leave the protection of the fort and venture to settle elsewhere. He located on land adjoining Connersville, and there spent the rest of his life, dying April 18th. 1837, aged 83 years, 7 months, and 19 days Catherine McCormick, wife of John McCormick, was born January 25th 1769, in the state of Pennsylvania. She was pensioned as her husbands widow, and survived him until February 22, 1862, and passed away at the age of 93 years and 28 days

Some sources list his date of death as Apr 16th instead of Apr 18. and his date or marriage as Mar 24 instead of Mar 2 1785.

Note: First Enlistment was 1775 as a private for two years with the Virginia Troops. his captain James Robertson under Colonel Christie. His Second Enlistment 1778 as a private for two years with Captain Mack's Company 14th Regiment Commanded By Col.Charlie Lewis. His 3rd Enlistment 1780 for two years in Capt. McCall's 'Company, after his service in Virginia the War ended in 1781. He later enlisted two more years Indian Fighting in Bedford County Pennsyvania in the Wataga River,His name appears in the roll call with the "On Guard" Troops. His application for pension was Sept.1831 at the age of 71 resident of Fayette County, Indiana as a Private No 9785 for Eight years of service. Signed H.Clay Evans Comm.of Pensions. President Monroe signed the Revolution War Pension Artical.... March 1818. McCormick recieved $8.00 per month, after his death his widow Catherine Drennan McCormick b. Jan 25,1769 in Bedford, Co., Pennsylvania was given a small pension 1845-1862 until she died at age 93 on Feb 22,1862 in Connersville, Indiana.

John McCormick came from Hamilton, Ohio with his two brothers and their families. They became the first European settlers of Indianapolis. John McCormick and his brother built a log cabin on the east bank of the White River in 1820. He lived there with his wife and eight children. Mr. McCormick was one of the first three county commissioners of Marion County. It was in his home that Indianapolis was chosen as Indiana's state capital. The engineer who laid out the plans for Indianapolis stayed with Mr. McCormick to do his work. John McCormick died in 1824. There are relatives of Mr. McCormick in Indiana today. McCormick's Rock commemorates the site of John McCormick's cabin as the first settler of Indianapolis on the east bank of the Whiter River located in White River State Park.

9. JAMES3 MCCORMICK (JOHN WESLEY2, THOMAS MCCORMICK1 JT) was born 05 Dec 1797 in Hamilton, Butler Co, OH, and died 06 Oct 1858 in Hendricks Co IN. He married PATSY PERKINS 08 Jun 1818 in Wayne Co, IN, daughter of JOHN PERKINS. She was born 22 May 1803 in South Carolina, and died 16 Oct 1880 in Frankfort, Clinton Co, IN.

Notes for JAMES MCCORMICK:

James McCormack, son of John and Cathanne (Drennan) McCormack, was born in 1797 in Hamilton, Butler Co., Ohio, and was only a boy when his parents came to Indiana. While still young he learned the trade of millwright, which he followed all his life, and many of the old-fashioned water-mills in central Indiana were of his construction. His brother, John (born in Hamilton county Ohio, Sept. 25, 1791-died Aug. 25, 1875) had moved out with his family to the paternal home neat Connersville after the war of 1812, in which he served. There he remained until after the treaty of St. Mary’s (1818), when he decided to remove to the "New Purchase," the tract of land in central Indiana secured by that treaty.

He and his family started for the new location Feb. 18, 1820, accompanied by twelve men, who helped to cut the road, and though the distance was but sixty miles the journey by sleds took eight days, the party landing on the banks of the White river Feb. 26, 1820. They camped on a spot near where the old National road bridge was afterward erected, and the double log cabin which was to become historic as the first white man’s dwelling in what is now the-capital city of Indiana was commenced at once. It was located on the White river, on the narrow, wedge-shaped piece of ground lying between what is now West Washington street and the National road, and stood between the two bridges which later were built across the river at the base of the wedge, being just north of the east end of the Washington street bridge. Some years ago there was a popular movement on foot to secure this piece of ground for a public park, to contain a reproduction of the McCormack cabin, which went to ruin many years ago, but nothing has been accomplished in that direction. The log house was typical of the times. It contained two rooms, each eighteen feet square, separated by a passage eight to ten feet wide, and the outside was often decorated with coonskins, bearskins and more frequently deerskins, stretched out to dry. The early settlers often wore breeches made of deerskin.

John McCormack located on the east bank of the river because the stream could not be forded, and moreover, the abundance of fish was an advantage not to be overlooked in the days when the immediate food supply was a question of even greater importance than it is now. James and Samuel McCormack, brothers of John, were of the party mentioned as helping him to move and erect his cabin, after which they returned to Connersville. Part of James McCormack’s family had made the journey, and he came back with his wife and the rest of his household in March. Samuel McCormack removed hither in the fall. The Indians were still in the neighborhood at the time of John McCormack’s settlement, and the nearest white settlers were those on the bluffs of the river near what is now Waverly. He kept the first tavern at that point, and when the commissioners chosen to decide upon a location for the seat of government visited this section they boarded with him part of the time. On June 7, 1820, Indianapolis was chosen, and the members of the delegation were greeted at the McCormack cabin by the few settlers of the vicinity.

The McCormacks—John and James and their families—lived here for two years, and then moved about four miles up the river, to what is now the Pitts farm, on the south edge of Washington township. They bought government land, and built on the east bank, almost directly west of the present site of the Country Club. There John McCormack built the first saw mill in the county, and some of the timbers of the old dam can yet be seen at low watermark. The brothers continued to live together and operate the mill until James moved to Rush county, in 1824, after which John ran it until his death, in 1825. He had married in Hamilton, Ohio, in 1811, Bethiah Case, and they had a family of eight children, their twin daughters, Tabitha and Lavina, celebrating their fourth birthday the day after the family arrived at Indianapolis. After her husband’s death Mrs. Bethiah McCormack married a Mr. King, by whom she had four childdren, and he pre-deceased her. She continued to live near the bluffs until after the close of the Civil war, when she moved to Arcadia, Ind., to live with her twin daughters until her death, in 1879.

James McCormack, who as related made the journey from Connersville to Indianapolis with his brother John, and himself settled here in March, 1820, went back to Rush county in 1824. In 1826 he moved to Marion, Shelby county, whence he returned to Indianapolis in March, 1832. His home was on the ground now included in Crown Hill cemetery, which he had bought the previous year. There he built a house in which he lived for three years, when he moved to Millersville to build a mill for Noah Leverton, on the site of the present mill at that point. His stay there was limited to a single season, and the following spring, 1836, he located on what was known as the Morrow farm, now a part of Riverside Park, and traversed by the Big Four railroad. In 1838 he bought the old mill site where his brother John had built a mill, putting up one which he conducted for some years. Disposing of this he moved to the Huston farm, and thence to the Hoover Mill, on the other side of the river. In 1845 he made his home on the Baldwin farm, where he lived a year . and then he returned to the Hoover Mill, where he remained until the big freshet of 1846-47. After that he had his home on the Martindale farm, on Eagle creek, whence he moved to a place he had bought a little south. This farm he sold and in 1853 moved into Hendricks county, near Cartersburg, where he bought land and built the mill which he was operating at the time of his death, Oct. 6, 1858.

For about twenty-five years he made his home in Danville, Hendricks county, and for four years he lived in Greencastle, returning to Indianapolis in 1873, after an absence of over a quarter of a century. He spent the remainder of his life in the city, dying here in 1885, when sixty-six years old.
