According to Joe Branson, Provo, Utah who is a descendant of Isaac Runya n, "There has been no known link to Isaacs parents as his cabin burned a nd all the family records with it.". The source of his information is unkn own. Amali (Runyon) Perkins has provided me with a copy of Isaacs handwri tten Petition to be placed on the pension list, filed in the County of Taz ewell, Virginia dated December 8th, 1819, and Isaac said ".... The preci se period of service rendered in Carolina your petitioner cannot now recol lect having been so unfortunate as to have all his papers and documen ts to substantiate the facts herein stated, consumed by fire. ...." From "Supplement To Runyon Genealogy" by Robert Runyon, 1962, Page 195 - " Col. Calvin I. Kephart, an authority on the genealogy of the Runyon-Runy an families of New Jersey, in a letter to Amos Runyon of Belfry, Kentuc ky stated that Isaac Runyon who settled in Montgomery County, Virginia abo ut 1780 was a son of Joseph who was born circa 1705. Joseph was a son of T homas and Martha (Dunn) Runyon. No Substantiating evidence has been found ." (E-mail I received indicates that "NJ Arch. XXIII pg 217" may be the so urce for documentation of Kepharts clams.). About half of the published Runyon-Runyan trees I have seen list this Jose ph Runyan as the father of Isaac. A second theory states that Isaacs parents were John and Elizabeth (Freem an) Runyon. This John Runyon b. November 18, 1695, Piscataway,Nj was the s on of John Runyan and Ann Elizabeth Dunn. The source for this theory appea rs to be Geri Halstead in "Under The Runyon Tree" stating "to my knowledg e, no record of their (John Runyon& Elizabeth Freeman) children has been f ound" but she said it was "problematical and possible" that the children w ere 1) Freeman Runyon 2) Nathaniel Runyon 3) Jacob Runyon b. circa 17 14 4) John Runyon b. circa 1723 5) William Runyon 6) Isaac Runyon 7) Hu gh Runyon. Without documentation, both theorys are nothing but speculation, and It m ay be that both are in fact in error. I have seen nothing which would gi ve weight to one theory over the other. I will therefor carry Joseph Runyo n, son of Thomas and Martha (Dunn) Runyon as Isaacs line until document ed proof of another relationship can be produced. From "Archives of The Pioneers of Tazewell County, Virginia" by Netti Schr einer-Yantis, Page 211, appeared this abstract of Isaacs petition for a p ention. (It should be noted that this is not a "word for word reproductio n" of the origional hand written document.) "Isaac Runion - New Jersey, Virginia Petition made 08 Dec 1819. Bill drawn 20 Dec 1819. Isaac served in the militia on several occasions during the Revolution and has never received but one dollar for his services. He first enlisted in New Jersey where he served two months. Next he served one month on the frontiers of Virginia under Captain Edwards. Then he served a tour to North Carolina in Colonel William Campbells Regiment of Virginia Militia and lastly a tour in Captain Edwards Company in Colonel Walter Crocketts Regiment. Isaacs age now exceeds four score years and he has lost entire use of his eyesight. Addron Runion made oath that he knew Isaac served the tours mentioned. John Preston of Wythe County states that he first knew Isaac Runion in the year 1780. He then resided in Montgomery County on or near Pine Run. Mr. Preston saw Isaac in North Carolina a short time before the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, there were two men of that name, father and son, he thinks. About 14 or 15 years ago, Isaac Runion moved from Wythe to Tazewell County. John B. George deposes that he is well acquainted with Isaac Runion, that he is 81 years old and he understands he has been blind for 9 years. He also has a son who is a cripple, the son is about 50 years old. He also has an aged wife. | | |
