William was the first born son in his family, thus making him the heir. We are not able to find record of his fathers first name but it may very well have been William, Richard or John, this being the most prominent name given to the first born and heir of the family in the records that we have thus far found. His father was a very powerful man, holding Eaton Water, Wiltshire as his "hold". The first of the family to live at Eaton Water was established there around the year 1086 or before. The half brother of King William held Eaton Water after 1066 but it was taken from him and given to other "servants of the King". We are missing the first names of the descendants between Williamus Pretor who was born 1110-1120 at Eaton Water, Wiltshire. This was during the period in history that the first born always inherited the main manorial estates and any titles the father held. For this reason, we assume that there was a direct line of descendancy from Williamus to William. Williamus who was still living in 1159, was listed with the occupation of: official/ reeve/sheriff. He was the reeve of Lincolnshire. A reeve is an official or "one who governors" for the established title holder who can be a prince, earl, duke, count, viscount, baron, etc. Williamus Prater was married to a woman with the surname of Delamere. Delamare is the name taken by a Norman family which came into England with William Duke of Normandy in his conquest of England in 1066, Norman De la Mere was a great Lord in Normandy, with his Castle DelaMere built on the edge of a lake in Normandy. It is believed that Williamus Prater had two sons: William Prater and Robertus Pretor, probably both born at Eaton Water. Robertus was still living in 1208. He was the reeve of Gloucestershire. The parents of Williamus Prater were Guilliumus (Williamus) Johonnie Prater, who was born about 1020-1040, and his wife whose surname was Yscitheor (Princes of Powys). They were married about 1070-1080. Guilliumus Johonnie Prater (William John) was a shire reeve under the Prince of Powys. The couple had another son Richardus Prater, born about 1098-1100 at Eaton Water. He was recorded as living in 1150 and later died at Lincolnshire, England. Yscitheor was an old Welch/Gaelic name from which the Lords of Powys used in early history, 800-1100s later became DeLaPole (of the Poole.) They lived at a castle in the Kingdom of Powys, located in central Wales and extended into several counties in southwest England. The Prater family may have began with ? de Presbyter (Prester/Prater/Practor) who was probably born in Wales or Denmark with Norman family ties, and probably died at Wiltshire, England or Powys, Wales. The name of his wife is unknown but this couple had a least one son, Reinbold de Presbyter (Prater) who was probably born in Wales. He became the first chancellor of England under William the Conqueror (also known as William the Bastard, Duke of Normandy). A presbyter was a highly educated noble that held power through the Catholic Church, the predominate religion of that period. The presbyter was an elder in the church who managed the vast church properties and worked very closely with the monarchy.
