Notes:		 Elias Cowles was a merchant in Litchfield, Conn., New York City, Hartford, Conn., and Rhinebeck, N. Y., where he died, Jan. 21, 1837 (gravestone). He was a sloop owner at Rhine¬ beck and was called “Captain,” perhaps from that fact (see His¬ tory of Old Rhinebeck, 1908).

March 18, 1798, in Hartford, Conn., graduated from Union College; member of the New York Legislature from Putnam Co., 1826-28; and in 1829-31 he was a representa¬ tive from New York State to the twenty-first Congress. He was a distinguished lawyer in New York City and d. there, unm., May 17, 1873 (tombstone, Rhinebeck, N. Y.). (See Congres¬ sional Directory.) 733. Frances Hooker, b. July 5, 1801 ; d. July 2, 1864 ; m. Oct. 25, 1837, Theophilus Nelson, b. Oct. 17, 1798; d. April 4, 1872, son of David and Hannah (Weekes) Nelson of Hyde Park, N. Y. He was a physician at Rhinebeck, N. Y. (Weekes Gen. 1885.) 733 a. Edward Elias, b. Jan. 5, 1803; d. Jan. 28, 1808 (tombstone). 733b. Edward Elias, b. Feb. 14, 1810; d. Jan. 25, 1869 (tombstone, Rhine¬ beck) ; graduated from Union College ; was a lawyer, Commis¬ sioner of Deeds for Connecticut in N. Y. State, 1844-50, and Justice of the Superior Court of N. Y. State. He was unm. in 1850. 733c. Infant, died Dec. 20, 1808 (tombstone).
