Joseph Matthew Copeland was the youngest of 6 children of James Dugal Copeland & Catherine Gillis Copeland. Joseph married Sarah Wade Cypert on November 1, 1843 in Wayne County, Tennessee. They had 7 children: Jemima Catherine (m. Robert Henry Clay Sims) Matthew Elihu (m. Zerilda Minerva Puckett) Nancy Jane "Lizzie" (m. Joseph Noah Davis) Thomas Newton "Tom", m. Margaret Florence Furgeson, Fannie Carr Sarah Virginia Ann (m. John Millard King) Lydia Alice (m. Joseph Barton Lay) Miranda Belle (a school teacher who never married, came down with typhoid fever & died shortly afterwards at the age of 25.) In the book, "The Pariss Sims Family and Related Families 1765-1965," on page 60, Joseph M. Copeland is mentioned, "Joseph M. Copeland, was a very prosperous farmer and trader. At one time he owned over 1,000 acres of land, much of the Francis Cypert Grant. As each of his children married, he gave them a good farm from his holdings."
