Fleming Stafford, Company H Pvt. Fleming Stafford, Company H Pvt. J Fleming STAFFORD (son of Miles John STAFFORD and Nancy RUNYON) w as born in Mar., 1823, near Piney Ridge, KY. He married Elizabeth �Lizzi e� EVANS (daughter of Ferrell Hammond EVANS and Phoebe MUSICK) on 22 Aug ., 1841, in Pike Co., KY. They had the following children: i. Elexius. Born abt. 1842. * ii. John Ferrell (1844-1926) iii. Phoebe. Born abt. 1845. iv. Hammond "Harmon". Born abt. 1847. v. Compton. Born in 1848. vi. Lewis. Born abt. 1850. Lewis died in Pike Co., KY in Aug., 1852. vii. Anderson "Anse". Born abt. 1851 in KY. viii. Rebecca. Born abt. 1852. ix. Vina Sophia "Trona". Born abt. 1854. x. Pauline. Born on 8 Oct., 1858, in Pike Co., KY. xi. Mary Pauline (1862-1945) xii. Martha Adelia "Addie" (1866-1936) Fleming enlisted with the 39th Kentucky Mounted Infantry and was muster ed into the service on 15 Jan., 1863, at Piketon. He was in The Batt le of Turmans Ferry (See By Robert Baker and Brian Hall) and was one of t he men mentioned who suffered frostbite from exposure. Fleming was admitt ed to the Regimental Hospital on 25 November, 1863, with Chronic Rheumati sm according to the Surgeon General�s report and was discharged on 15 Feb ., 1864, at Catlettsburg in Boyd Co., KY, due to disability. His pension p apers describe him as 6� tall, fair complexion, light or gray hair, and bl ue eyes. On 22 Dec 1885 when J Fleming was about 62, he second married Elizabeth "P eggy" HARDY-ARTRIP (widow of Jackson ARTRIP), in Lawrence Co., KY. Bo rn on Aug. 1827, in NC. They had no children. J. Fleming STAFFORD died in Boyd Co., KY, (Catlettsburg) on 27 Mar., 190 1. Elizabeth HARDY-ARTRIP applied for Fleming�s pension. The pension fi le is approximately 41 pages long and includes a �Special Investigation� i nto the circumstances of Fleming�s death. One of Fleming�s daughters, Soph ie STAFFORD-WELLMAN, accused their step-mother of having poisoned their fa ther to death.
