John attended Emmanuel College Cambridge, B.A. 1646-7, M.A. 1650 and Fellow 1649. He was ejected from the latter in 1654 probably as a result of the religious turmoil at the time. Though we have no evidence to confirm it, it seems likely that John, having married the incumbent’s daughter (see below) and their children being born there, was a curate at West Rasen in Lincolnshire until being appointed Rector in 1676. In 1693 they moved to his home parish of Wigston when he was appointed Vicar there. He retired in 1706 at the age of 80. His will was proved at Leicester 10 Apr 1708; he had lands in Wigston, Bushby, and in Lincolnshire. John left the latter to his daughter Sarah, those in Bushby to his son George, and in Wigston to his son Richard. He is buried in a vault under the altar of All Saints, Wigston, together with his wife and other members of his family.
| Notes: | Nichols says "within the rails of the altar John Davenport STB Rector of de Raisin Occident in agro Lincoln et per quindecim annos hujus ecclesiae vicarius don ec annis gravis ei renunciavit AD 1707 age 81". He married Sarah Thompson, 24 Jul 1657 in Long Sutton, Lincs, b. 1638/39 in West Rasen, d. 14 Jun 1704 in Wigston. Sarah was the daughter of the Rev. Anthony Thompson. D.D. the incumbent at West Rasen before John. The baptismal dates of their children from Richard onwards come from the IGI and have yet to be verified.
