Langobardens origins are told in Origo Gentis Langobardum from c. 650, and Paul Diaconus more comprehensive Historia Langobardum from c. 790. According to the origins, the Langobards originally originated from "an island in Scandinavia," and lived there under its old name Winnili. They emigrated south to the southern coast of the Baltic Sea where they conflicted with the Vandals. In the Langobard history, the emigration from Scandinavia is explained by the fact that the population had grown to a point of overcrowding. The population then divided into three parts, and it was discussed which third would leave the motherland and seek new homes. The group who left the country chose the brothers Ibor and Aion as chieftains (or kings). Also, their mother Gambara participated in the management of emigrants, she is regarded as a very wise woman who enjoyed great trust.
