Robert De Montgomery   Sex: Male
Birth Date 1188

Father   Born:
Mother   Born:
Robert De Montgomery
Notes:
Robert of Montgomerys name is noticed in at least one charter issued by Malcolm IV, King of Scots, 1153-65. In this charter his name is noticed in company with Walter son of Alan, the first of Scotlands family of hereditary stewards, and this suggests that the charter belongs to the period 1163-65. St. Andrew, p. 203 His name is also noticed in the witness list of another seven undated charters which were either issued by Walter son of Alan, or were issued during his time as steward,1163-77. Passelet, p. 5 et seq. Kelso, charter number 170 on p. 138 Melrose I, charter number 66 on pp. 55-6 The name of Robert of Montgomery is also noticed in an undated charter that was issued by Jocelin, Bishop of Glasgow, which belongs to the time of Alan son of Walter, the second hereditary steward of Scotland, 1177-1204, Melrose I, charter number 43 on pp. 36-7 and another which was probably also issued during the time of the second steward. Passelet, p. 116 His name is usually found high up on the witness lists.

Notes: Robert of Montgomery was one of the most prominent of the followers of Walter son of Alan, the first hereditary steward of Scotland. It seems quite likely, therefore, probable even, that he received a fief from his lord. Sir William Fraser claimed that the fief in question was the lands of Eaglesham : "Robert obtained from Water the Steward a grant of the lands of Eagleshame" Memorials: 7 but there is nothing in the evidence reviewed here to suggest that this was actually the case. The Reverend John Anderson correctly observed that Sir William Frasers statement was entirely conjectural.
