Notes: n the arms of His angels, ARCHIE WILSON LAY left this earth May 28, 2007. Born in Waller, Texas, October 14, 1916, Archie was the second of 5 children born to Amalia Kalbow Lay and Archie William Lay. From a rural, barefoot childhood in Waller, Texas, Archie pursued his dreams--he rode the Southern Pacific to Austin, Texas, walked from the train station to his boarding house and graduated from The University of Texas in 1937 becoming a Longhorns fan for life. Archie married another Longhorn and the love of his life, Elizabeth Coleman Lay, on June 6, 1942. Married 64 years, Archie and Elizabeth were blessed with 3 children and 6 grandchildren. Archie raised his family with salt-of-the-earth values, believing the greatest gift to a child was an education. Dad firmly believed in these words of his favorite poet, John Donne, "send not to know For whom the bell tolls, It tolls for thee." He led his family to church every Sunday, blessed every meal, and made sure there was a Hempstead watermelon for the 4th of July, many times accompanied with fresh crabs trapped off the jetties in Galveston. November brought dove and quail to the table and Texas Longhorns football. Archie served in the Air Force for four years in varying capacities as an officer in the Air Force Training Command during World War II. After his honorable discharge from military service, he was employed by the Veterans Administration. Earning a doctorate degree in educational psychology June, 1957, Archie continued his work for the Veterans Administration, totaling 42 years of service.. Counseling, rehabilitating and job training disabled veterans was his lifes work. An avid bird hunter from chihood on, Archie trained bird dogs and hunted them for 40 years. An expert fisherman as well, the rising summer sun found him wade fishing along his favorite upper Texas coastline spots,Bolivar Flats, Offats Bayou and San Louis Pass. In his later years, he enjoyed fishing the Laguna Madre in South Padre Island with his favorite fishing guides Freddie and Janie Petty. Archies curiosity for and love of life never flagged. He and Elizabeth traveled to the farthest reaches of the world Being dedicated, experienced bird watchers, their far flung travels included exotic birding destinations. When traveling was no longer a possibility, he traveled on the internet--always looking up the next new place he wished to visit and investigating how to do it. In addition to his dear Elizabeth, Archie leaves to celebrate his life, children Jan Hill, Ralph Lay, wife Kim Graham, Mary Kesterson, husband Ron Kesterson, and his grandchildren, Catherine Hill Tanner, Travis Tanner, David Hill, Jennifer Lay, Graham Jankura, Sara Kesterson, and Andrew Kesterson, who bid sweet adieu to their loving father and grandfather. The Family gratefully thanks our earthly angels, Pearl Radcliff and Linda Johnson, for their exquisite and compassionate care over the last several months. The Houston Hospice blue team was our tender guide along Archies final earthly journey for which we extend our humblest thanks. And to those at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church, of which Archie and Elizabeth were members for 34 years, the Family thanks you for the memories, prayers, and support over these particularly hard last months. A Memorial Service for Archie is scheduled Friday, June 2, at 2:00 p.m. Memorial Drive United Methodist Church,
