"Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the Revolution"[9] "Records of the office of the County Clerk at Brantford, Ontario show that in 1802 Allen Sage received a grant of land from the Indian Chief Brant. The land was situated on the Grand River. The records further show that this land was granted for a period of 999 years, and, in explanation of this, I might say that the Indians had no title sufficient that they could give deed outright and they made their leases for a long period of time and there was a clause inserted demanding a nominal yearly rental, of some common inhabitant of the farmyard generally, which in the case of the above lease contained the clause Shall pay one dunghill fowl per year if demanded. Later, and about the year 1846 the Crown gave title outright to all these lands. At the time the lease or grant was made to Allen he was termed husbandman and when he sold it in 1810 gentleman. The original lease reads in part, Comprising 297 acres, the same more nor less, and butted and bounded as follows: The said six Nation Indians, by their Chief, Joseph Brant, have hereby devised, granted and farm letten [sic], and by these presents do hereby devise, grant and to farm let etc. The sum paid was $590.00. This land Allen sold to the Lange family in 1810 and it is still in the posession of the family. In connection with the sale or deed to this property is an affidavit made by _______ Speer, in 1817, stating that he visited the home of Joseph Sage, (son of Selah) in Bloomfield, N.Y. and had there obtained the copy originally had by Allen of the lease which Brant gave himj." Allen Jr. made an affidavit in 1804 which was found in the Archive Department in Ottawa: "The improvements made on (here describes certain land) made in the name o f my son Samuel and my brother James, of the Gennessee Country, were made at my expense, and it is my desire that they be granted the petitioner, my son-in-law Isaac Burdick." (This land is near Brandford, Ontario.) Allen Jr. is buried in Carroll Burying Ground, adjacent to Ingersoll, Oxford County, Ontario. | | Benoni Sage b.1703 APR 01 d.1734 Spouse: Mary Tibbals Allen | Father: John Page Sage Mother: Hannah Starr | | | Daniel E.
