Notes:
Notes for Asa Eastwood In 1800, with his brother John Eastwood, he served as a sailor on the U.S. Constitution, was an officer on a Dutch warship for several years, and in 1817 purchased a 107 acre farm at Cicero, New York. In 1822, he returned to New York City, where he became a member of Tammany Hall and held several political jobs, one of them being collector of war taxes from Quakers (a thankless job!) in New York City. He returned to Cicero, New York, in 1825, engaged in the salt business and became one of the earliest Masons in the vicinity. In 1833, he was elected to the New York State Legislature as a Member of the Assembly from Onondaga County. In his diary he wrote "I have been a sailor, a soldier, a peddler, a rum seller, a hatter, a cartman, a copper, a farmer, a military officer, a civil officer, an office seeker, a merchant, a pettifogger and a politician. In a letter from Lucinda Eastwood Fuller to her father Asa Eastwood dated 15 Dec 1839, she states: We have Methodist meeting every Sunday and every other Tuesday evening."

Eastwood, was brutally murdered upon his flat-boat about four miles below the village of Napoleonville in Assumption parish, at an early hour this morning, by some colored persons who have not as yet been satisfactorily identified. His brains were beaten out by clubs and the body terribly mutilated. A colored woman was also so severly beaten that her life is despaired of. It is generally supposed that the parties engaged in this tragedy were prompted by motives of robbery.
