By reference to the August 1947 issue of the JOURNAL [ Vol. XIV,NO.4 P. 173 Passim] it will be seen that Humphery Davenport was a member of the St. Michaels Vestry 1660-1661 and Churchwarden in 1659 [P. 177] Humphery Davenport from Barbados settled in Dorchester, Mass, about 1666, where a Thomas Davenport, possibly a relative, had been residing since 1640. He married Rachel,daughter of Thomas Holmes a brother of Major William Holmes of Scituate and Boston, Mass. He soon removed to Hartford, Conn.,where his wife was convicted for card playing by pious or bigoted Puritan magistrates. Thereupon, he removed to the more liberal atmosphere of the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam [New York] and in 1674 he was living on the West side of Broadway, below Rector Street. He was the Ancestor of the Davenports of Westchester Co. New York, and Western Connecticut . He wascommissioned clerk of Ulster Co. New York [Savages Genealogical Dictionary of New England 11/12; N. When Rachel Holmes was born on 11 March 1615, in London, Middlesex, England, her father, Thomas Holmes, was 23 and her mother, Henrietta Martin, was 22. She married Humphrey Davenport Jr. in 1655, in Barbados. They were the parents of at least 5 sons. She died in 1705, in Kingston, Ulster, New York Colony, British Colonial America, at the age of 90.
