May 12, 17n, at Hatfield, Mass. (tombstone), m. there Nov. 22, _ 1668, Deborah Bartlett, baptized March 18, 1646-7 at Hartford, Conn., d. Dec. II, 17n; aged 66, at Hatfield, Mass. (tombstone);. daughter of Robert Bartlett of Hartford, Conn.; an original proprietor; had been at Cambridge, Mass., 1632, if as is probable he came in the "Lion", arrived Sept. 16 of that year. He removed to Northampton, Mass., about 1655, there was killed by the Indians, March 14, 1676. . John Cowles went with his father to Hadley, Mass,, and settled in that part afterwards called Hatfield. He may have accompanied his father in 166o, but whether he remained there or returned to Conn., and went back again with the family in 1664 is not known. He w.1s selectman in 1682, 1683 and 168g; Constable March 16go; freeman-May 30,_ 16go.- In 1698 he signed his name to an agre,;ment as John Cols, but it appears as Cowles in the record of his · narriage. illd the settlement of his estate.
