| Notes: | Thomas Starr of New Romney, co. Kent is the earliest known member of the Starr family in the county of Kent. There is no evidence to support a tradition that the Starrs came to England out of Flanders as part of the weaving industry. Furthermore, the name is not found among the various merchant guilds. This family was researched in great detail by Hosea Starr Ballou who published a series of 20 articles which appeared in the NEHGR between 1935 and 1943. [1] The Starr Family Association published these articles as a book entitled Early Starrs in Kent and New England, by Hosea Starr Ballou (1944). [2] The book chapters are exact copies of the NEHGR, just arranged in a different order. Suggestions that he is the son of a John Starr of Beere, co. Devon are a much copied error found on the internet and on ancestry.com. This John Starr was part of a different Starr family, from an entirely different county, who was born far too late to possibly have been the father of Thomas Starr, mayor of New Romney. There is no evidence at all as to the name of Thomas Starr’s father. That he is the father of Thomas Starr, and grandfather of the immigrant Comfort Starr is an identification made by Hosea Starr Ballou. In his will he names his son and heir Thomas Starr, this Thomas Starr in a deposition states he was born in New Romney, and finally property owned by a grandson Jehosaphat Starr apparently came from this Thomas Starr.
