George was an M.A. from Emmanuel College Cambridge (1653). While there he became a friend of William Sancroft a Fellow of the College and himself a friend of John Cosin, a more senior churchman and one time Master of Peterhouse College. After the Restoration Cosin was appointed bishop of Durham and quickly appointed Sancroft and George to be chaplains to him, Sancroft in addition having the incumbency of a local parish, Houghton-le-Spring. Cosin had brought back a large collection of books from his exile in Paris during the Commonwealth and George took on the task of building a diocesan library based on them. Sancroft became increasingly busy outside the diocese (on his way ultimately to becoming the Archbishop of Canterbury) and in 1664 resigned from Houghton-le-Spring; George succeeded him as Rector. George rebuilt the rectory (see engraving of this in Nichols' Leic. iv. 380) adding a chapel, and built and endowed a new wing to the almshouses. He travelled widely and corresponded regularly with Sancroft, who preserved the letters along with those of his other correspondents. The majority of these are now held by The Bodlian Library in Oxford with others in the British Library, and George’s are the subject of an article in Archaeologia Aeliana, third series, volume IX 1913 pp 1 -10. Transcriptions of a number of them were made in Victorian times by a family member, Frank Ringrose (No. 1036); they are contained in two notebooks held by the LRO. George gave a chalice and paten to All Saints Church in Wigston in 1661; the paten is inscribed, "Ecclesiae de Wigston dedit Georgius Davenport Clericus natus ibid," and the chalice bears the Davenport arms. They are still in the possession of the church and were viewed and photographed there by the Davenport reunion lunch participants in March 2007. He also donated some 70 books and manuscripts of his own to the Durham Cathedral Library. He died suddenly at the age of 46. In his will, dated 17 Sep 1676, he left his lands at Bushby and Wigston to his brother John together with his books 15 and his personal papers, and £40 and £20 respectively to the poor of Houghton and Wigston. Additionally, he left personal items to various relatives and named his nephew John (No. 107) as residual legatee and sole executor. In 1850 Henry Devereux Davenport (No. 628) arranged for the repair of the stained glass window over the Davenport family pew in All Saints, Wigston, and dedicated it to the memory of George.

Written By : Ryan Barrick - - - September 15, 2020 Sunday was Grandparents Day. Jokingly when visiting my grandmother (Marilyn Davenport Basham) I asked if she had celebrated the day with grandparents when young. She assured the “holiday” wasn’t recognized, but that she had spent a lot of time in their home--Houston & Mildred Stratton Davenport. The two had nine children together and the family would routinely gather with their children and grandchildren on Sundays. Mamaw said they lived at the corner of Riverside Benleo Road & Ridge Road. Mamaw and her family lived just below the hill in a small white house that years later was moved up the hill to sit on the Riverside-Benleo Road. During her childhood the two houses were separated by thick woods, but the family had worn a path between the two. Mamaw explained that her grandfather Houston suffered from kidney issues. To her, it seemed the family always called on her and her elder brother Bobby to help the grandparents. One night when she was around 12 to 13 years old (so around 1945/1946), she recalled being in their home and instructed by Mildred to go and fetch help due to Houston’s condition worsening--he was going to have to be taken to town for medical attention. Terrified, Mamaw was given a lantern and sent off into the woods to alert her father back at home. Shortly before or after midnight, Mamaw recalls it being the creepiest walk of her life. Darkness was so thick you could almost feel it. Each step taken was greeted by the hooting of an owl. When she exited the woods and saw her homeplace in sight, terror continued. Off in the distance she could see another lantern flickering and headed in her direction. As the lantern in question continued to approach she was soon relieved to recognize it was her father, RT Davenport. To this day she hasn’t been able to figure out how he knew she was approaching--these were before the days of electricity and telephones. Perhaps in those days the need for help was better sensed.

By reference to the August 1947 issue of the JOURNAL [ Vol. XIV,NO.4 P. 173 Passim] it will be seen that Humphery Davenport was a member of the St. Michaels Vestry 1660-1661 and Churchwarden in 1659 [P. 177] Humphery Davenport from Barbados settled in Dorchester, Mass, about 1666, where a Thomas Davenport, possibly a relative, had been residing since 1640. He married Rachel, daughter of Thomas Holmes a brother of Major William Holmes of Scituate and Boston, Mass. He soon removed to Hartford, Conn.,where his wife was convicted for card playing by pious or bigoted Puritan magistrates. Thereupon, he removed to the more liberal atmosphere of the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam [New York] and in 1674 he was living on the West side of Broadway, below Rector Street. He was the Ancestor of the Davenports of Westchester Co. New York, and Western Connecticut . He wascommissioned clerk of Ulster Co. New York [Savages Genealogical Dictionary of New England 11/12; N. Barbados was getting crowded before the early 1700s, and many younger sons such as Humphrey Davenport considered relocating in order to get land. For lack of fevers, New England, with colder winters, became attractive. Humphrey married a Rachel Holmes at Dorchester, Mass., ,and the couple located at Hartford Conn, where his wife was later prosecuted and fined for playing cards on Sunday, and his son William was taken from him by the court and turned over to a Capt Watts. He and wife Rachel, disgusted with the Puritan court tactics, relocated to New York City, where the Dutch culture was more tolerant. Court records exist around the time the English took over Nieuw Amsterdam from the Dutch, showing Humphrey and two drinking friends (this may have been Humphrey Jr.), were prosecuted for damaging a ship at dock by firing off the

John Davenport, baptised 24 Jan 1579/80 in Wigston, buried 8 Jan 1654/5 in Wigston; gentleman. He was listed as a freeholder in a return of 1630. His will was proved PCC 14 Mar 1654. He married Elizabeth Hales*, 30 Sep 1622 in Exhall, Warwickshire, buried 8 Dec 1658 in Wigston. * Elizabeth could have been the daughter of Timothy Hales and Elizabeth Ashley who was baptised on 8 June 1589; Timothy was the brother of Sir Charles Hales of Newnham, their father was recorded in the 1619 Warwickshire Visitation as Stephanus Hales de Newland in the County of Warwickshire, armigerous. Equally possible however is that she was the Elizabeth, baptised on 20 December 1604, a daughter of Sir Charles’s son Stephen and his wife Abigail Walter. If the former it would account for the fact that they had only four children as she would have been 42 when George was born. If the latter she would have probably been about 17 at the time of her marriage (John was 42) but it would be consistent with them choosing the names Abigail and Stephen for two of their children. More evidence is required to resolve the matter. In her burial entry Elizabeth is described as GENTLEWOMAN
SIR REV DD

Spouse1: Elizabeth Wooley
b.1597 APR 09 Coventry, Warwick, England
d.1670 MAR 15 Wigston Magna, Leicestershire, England
Father: Mayor of Coventry Henry Davenport
Mother: Winifred Barnabit
He attended Merton and Magdalen Colleges, Oxford, and began preaching at a private chapel in 1615 He was appointed lecturer and curate of St. Lawrence Jewry Church in London in 1619 and five years later, 1624, was chosen vicar of St. Stephens. Doubts about his religious orthodoxy almost prevented Davenport from serving in this post, but the intervention of powerful friends and his own declaration that he was not a Puritan satisfied the London authorities. By 1629, however, Davenport clearly identified with the Puritan cause and contributed 50 pounds to the Massachusetts Bay Company. Three years later he thought seriously about emigrating, and in 1633 when William Laud, archenemy of the Puritans, became Archbishop of Canterbury, Davenport resigned his position and fled to Holland. Son John Jr born in April 1635 at The Hague, Holland.[3] In 1637, with the encouragement of John Cotton in Massachusetts and his friend Theophilus Eaton (1590-1657/58), a prosperous London merchant, Davenport decided to sail to America. Eaton joined him, as did a number of families from St. Stephens parish. Although the members of the Davenport-Eaton company hoped to prosper economically in the New World, religious considerations were paramount among these strict and doctrinaire Puritans who hoped to establish a biblical commonwealth in New England. The company arrived in Massachusetts in June 1637. Davenport and Eaton quickly became dissatisfied with the land offered them and discouraged by the Anne Hutchinson Antinomian Controversy. They decided, therefore, to establish an independent colony at Quinnipiac, the site of a good harbor. Davenport and Eaton removed to the site of New Haven in April 1638. Eaton became governor of the new colony, and Davenport was installed as minister of the New Haven church. The colony grew to include the towns of Milford, Guilford, Branford, Stamford, and Southold, Long Island, but never prospered as its founders intended. The restoration of Charles II to the English throne put the tiny commonwealth that lacked any legal foundation in imminent danger. New Havens cause was scarcely aided by the sanctuary it gave to regicides Edward Whalley and John Goffe, reputedly secreted for a time in Davenports own home. Davenport unsuccessfully opposed the absorption of New Haven into Connecticut--as prescribed by the Charter of 1662. With the battle lost, Davenport felt that his lifes work had failed, and in 1667 he accepted the pastorate of the First Church in Boston. The New Haven church opposed his dismisal, and he was only installed in Boston a few months before his death in March 1669/70. John Davenport was an eminent scholar and theologian justly acclaimed for his crucial role in the founding and early history of New Haven. The ministry of the Rev. Gentleman. John attended Emmanuel College Cambridge, B.A. 1646-7, M.A. 1650 and Fellow 1649. He was ejected from the latter in 1654 probably as a result of the religious turmoil at the time. Though we have no evidence to confirm it, it seems likely that John, having married the incumbent’s daughter (see below) and their children being born there, was a curate at West Rasen in Lincolnshire until being appointed Rector in 1676. In 1693 they moved to his home parish of Wigston when he was appointed Vicar there. He retired in 1706 at the age of 80. His will was proved at Leicester 10 Apr 1708; he had lands in Wigston, Bushby, and in Lincolnshire. John left the latter to his daughter Sarah, those in Bushby to his son George, and in Wigston to his son Richard. He is buried in a vault under the altar of All Saints, Wigston, together with his wife and other members of his family. Nichols says "within the rails of the altar John Davenport STB Rector of de Raisin Occident in agro Lincoln et per quindecim annos hujus ecclesiae vicarius don ec annis gravis ei renunciavit AD 1707 age 81". He married Sarah Thompson, 24 Jul 1657 in Long Sutton, Lincs, b. 1638/39 in West Rasen, d. 14 Jun 1704 in Wigston. Sarah was the daughter of the Rev. Anthony Thompson. D.D. the incumbent at West Rasen before John. The baptismal dates of their children from Richard onwards come from the IGI and have yet to be verified.

Despite considerable work over many years nothing conclusive has yet been found about Richard’s immediate ancestors. Recently, however, DNA analysis of his present day descendants has confirmed that he was a descendant of the ancient Cheshire family and furthermore almost certainly from the Henbury branch. Knowing this, the most obvious possible link is with Edward Davenport (1504 – 1584) MP and Mayor of Coventry whom we know was a Henbury Davenport. However the DNA pattern of his descendants and that of Richard’s rules out a close connection. It has also been suggested that Richard descends from Thomas Davenport (c 1508 - 1558), wool merchant and Mayor of Leicester in 1553/4, but no trace has been found in Leicestershire or elsewhere of Thomas’s only son Harry. (In view of Thomas’s close business connections with Coventry it seems likely that he was from the Coventry family.) Richard first appears in the Wigston parish register of 1568 as the father at the baptism of a son, also Richard. Thereafter nine further children are baptised at appropriate intervals, five boys and four girls. In due course all the boys made their living from the land, three in Wigston, one in Kilby, one in Bushby (a village in the parish of Thurnby) and one at Kibworth Beauchamp. There was also the usual distribution for those times across occupations/social positions; three became yeomen, one a gentleman, and the youngest two husbandmen. Dimock Fletcher (see below) states that Richard himself was styled a gentleman though his source for this assertion has not yet been found. If we assume that he was, say, 25 when his first son was born then he himself would have been born in 1543 and aged 80 when he died. He married Alice, c 1567, buried 12 Nov 1624 in Wigston. Richard was enrolled as a Freeman of the Borough of Leicester in 1576 as a haberdasher and chandler. There is no record of him serving an apprenticeship and the date is much later than one would expect if this was his principal occupation and source of income; additionally none of his sons followed the trade. Thus one wonders if his membership was principally for social reasons – and his source of income was from the ownership of land. Indeed in 1599 Richard purchased two messuages, two cottages, four gardens, four orchards, and twenty four acres of land from Joan Freman, the widow of Ralph Freman. He was a churchwarden at All Saints, Wigston in 1604. Wigston, Leicestershire, UK

William Davenport, baptised 8 Mar 1576/7 in Wigston, buried 7 Apr 1668 in Wigston; yeoman, he resided in Wigston and Kilby. William was a churchwarden in Kilby in 1617. His will was proved Leicester 16 Dec 1670; he left his property in Kilby to his grandson William. He married Alice Burgess, 20 Sep 1610, buried 16 Aug 1663 in Wigston. She and William were married by licence in which it states she was from Cosby and that her two bondsmen were John Bent of Cosby and John Burgess of Dunton Bassett. The latter was probably her father as a John Burgess of Dunton Bassett named a daughter Alice, married with children, in his will in the 1620s. Certainly there is no mention of a Burgess family in the Cosb

.Bramhall Hall.
Bramhall Hall
Bramall Hall is one of Cheshires grandest black and white timber-framed buildings. It is a manor house built in the traditional local style. Before the Norman conquest in 1066, Bramall was held as two separate manors, owned by two Saxon freeman - Brun and Hacun. A few years later, William the Conqueror subdued the North West of England and he gave both parts of the manor land to Hamon de Masci, the first Baron of Dunham Massey who was one of his followers. The Bramall land was probably a waste having been devastated during William the Conquerors harsh sub dual of the North West of England. During the next 800 years three families owned the estate: The Masseys, the de Bromales and the Davenports.
