Notes: | Elias Cowles was a merchant in Litchfield, Conn., New York City, Hartford, Conn., and Rhinebeck, N. Y., where he died, Jan. 21, 1837 (gravestone). He was a sloop owner at Rhine¬ beck and was called “Captain,” perhaps from that fact (see His¬ tory of Old Rhinebeck, 1908).

Jan. 25, 1869 (tombstone, Rhine¬ beck) ; graduated from Union College ; was a lawyer, Commis¬ sioner of Deeds for Connecticut in N. Y. State, 1844-50, and Justice of the Superior Court of N. Y.
